What Covid-19 vaccinations and Pre-departure testing should I have?

Requirements for travelling overseas during the pandemic are more complicated than usual. And this especially applies if you are heading to places like Australia that have strict rules. So, vaccinations and pre-departure testing are vital, and what is required frequently changes. Fortunately, our Highbrook team can help you tick all the boxes to smooth your journey.

Firstly, you must have all the necessary NZ pre-departure tests done and the results presented in the correct format before you leave Auckland to travel abroad. 

On departure, you will need to show this documentation with your International Travel Vaccination Certificate during your check-in Auckland Airport. Also, you could need this proof in any transit country and on arrival at your final destination. Bear in mind that the correct timeframe is essential and this differs depending on your destination.

Which Pre-departure Tests and documentation do I need to leave NZ?

Depending on your destination, the pre-departure tests or health certificates you require may include:

  • Supervised Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)and Clinical assessment. We will issue you a stamped and signed test result and Medical certificate.
  • Covid-19 Past-positive Clearance Certificate

Of course, if you have recently had Covid-19, you’ll need to show your isolation period is finished. You’ll need a Covid-19 Medical clearance certificate. Book an appointment for a clinical assessment so that we can issue a Covid-19 past-positive clearance certificate. This certificate states that you have recently recovered from Covid-19 and are no longer showing symptoms or infectious. After an infection, Covid tests come back positive for about three months.

Things you need to know about Pre-departure Testing and costs

1: Pre-departure testing is not government funded, so you can’t get this done at community testing stations.

Furthermore, it is your responsibility to check with your airline and travel agent to ensure you have the correct Pre-departure Covid tests and documentation. Finally, remember to check any countries you transit through and your destination.

2: Of course, many countries still require a negative NZ Pre- departure Test. For a PCR test, visit East Care Urgent Care on Botany Road. Generally, they recommend that you allow at least 24 hours before your departure time so that the laboratory can process the swab and return the result.

3: However, some countries accept a Supervised Rapid Antigen test (RAT) for entry. One of our nurses will take your details and do the test. It takes 15 minutes to get the result. Then you will see a doctor who will give you a signed RAT report.

How much does a Pre-departure supervised Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) cost?

Standard Supervised RAT testing will cost $60 per person. Travel RAT pricing for families is as below:

  • Family of 4 – $180
  • Family of 5 – $200
  • Family of 6 – $210

4: Finally, if you have recently had Covid-19, you will need an appointment to see one of our doctors for a clinical examination. They will give you a Covid-19 past-positive certificate. Consultation for this is $60 per person

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:

  • NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
  • International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration

On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.

Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.

This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.

Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.

The length of your first appointment with your new doctor will be as follows:

0-39 years 40 years - 15 Minutes - 30 minutes

40 years+ - 15 Minutes - 30 minutes

You will get full access to the patient portal “My Indici” once you have completed your screening appointment.

All consultations are by appointment only.

Patient portals are secure online sites where patients can access their health information and interact with their general practice. Set up access to your patient portal at or email if you would like help.

We recommend that you plan ahead and request your repeat medicines via your patient portal My Indici two weeks before you run out. If you do not have access to a portal, you can phone us and leave a message with the nurse to organise this. Our doctors use an electronic prescribing system which can send your prescription to your local pharmacy (please specify name and location).
The results of tests that have been ordered by our Doctors will be available on My Indici when they have been reviewed. If your test results are of concern you will be contacted by one of our team.
